Green Jade and Road Men by David R. Solheim with Shirley Wang
Green Jade and Road Men: Translations, Commentary and Poems of China was written in conjunction with Solheim’s former student and native speaker of Chinese, Xing-Fang Zou, now Shirley Wang. Ms. Wang selected 15 well-known examples of traditional Chinese short verse and provided literal translations and background notes on the poems. Solheim shifted the material and sentiments into English language poetry. The second section of the book is composed of just over 30 poems based on Solheim’s travels in China. The poems include visits to many famous sites, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and Terra Cotta Warriors, but also depicts the experience of meeting his collaborator’s father in her home town in the People’s Republic. 80 pages with pen and ink illustrations.
